NEW: UPDATE NOVEMBER 18, 2016
This subject has been in the news lately so I thought I should repost it.

This post was first published on October 07, 2007 at 12:00 and republished June 9, 2008 at 3:00 and May 15, 2013 at 1:00 am. And Published again November, 18th 2016

NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER: It’s been a half-dozen years since the first publication, a number of links have been updated, some were dead. Please send comment if you find links that don’t work.

In the late 90s a buddy and I went to an exhibition at a Las Vegas Public Library. It was The Una Storia Segreta exhibit. Una Storia Segreta (the words in Italian mean both “a secret story” and “a secret history.”) The secret story is about the treatment of Italians and/or Italian-Americans in the United States just preceding and during the Second World War. You are probably aware that persons of Japanese ancestry were placed in American internment camps, but might be surprised to find that many Italians, and Germans in the US were also interned. The Italians and Germans as well as individuals from other ethnic groups were considered “Enemy Aliens.”

The government’s actions – in the 90s – (read on) shows that cooler heads can eventually prevail.
The reason for this post is to shine that light… Continue reading

Want to work for country legend Willie Nelson? His marijuana company Willie’s Reserve is now hiring for five positions in Colorado

It’s not a bad day of job-hunting when you can tell your friends, “Today I applied for a job working at Willie Nelson’s weed company.”

Sure enough, the country music legend’s cannabis business Willie’s Reserve is nearing its launch in Colorado — and the marijuana company is currently hiring for five positions, a spokesperson confirmed to The Cannabist.

In past interviews, Nelson and his colleagues have said the Willie’s Reserve brand will operate from its own storefronts that look and feel like “the anti-Walmart.” But it’s been a while since Nelson and his team have addressed their plans, so it’s not yet clear if there will be an actual Willie’s Reserve storefront — or if the Willie’s Reserve product line, like Snoop Dogg’s Leafs By Snoop line, will partner with existing state marijuana licenses to be sold in unrelated, already established pot shops.

The open Willie’s Reserve positions include production manager, extractor, compliance officer, bookkeeper and sales director.

Nelson and his colleagues first talked publicly about getting into the cannabis business at the 2015 South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

“(Nelson) wants it to be something that’s reflective of his passion,” Willie’s Reserve’s Michael Bowman told The Daily Beast last year. “Ultimately, it’s his. But it was developed by his family, and their focus on environmental and social issues, and in particular this crazy war on drugs, and trying to be a bright light amongst this trail as we’re trying to extract ourselves from the goo of prohibition read more…

“This super-famous writer’s Christmas tradition was, um, setting his tree on fire”

“Hunter S. Thompson is best known for his novels, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary (along with the movies, too) and for pioneering the style of Gonzo journalism. Now he’s also going to be known for one of the oddest Christmas traditions ever: setting your tree on fire.”

“While today we either leave our trees outside for trash day, or drop it back in the woods, or pack it up and put it in the attic because it’s a fake tree, Thompson decided to take a completely different approach to the end of Christmas. After Christmas, when it was time to take the tree down, it’s final resting place became the fireplace. Because why just leave your tree outside in the wilderness when you can watch it BURN?” Continue reading

TAKE ACTION!

Background. The Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range (PMWHR is a spectacular wilderness but a high percentage of the 39,651 acres is rocky and unproductive for grazing. The herd now exceeds 160 adult horses. Without range expansion which TCF actively pursues, there must be some limited removals to ensure that the range continues to support the herd. There are no livestock on the range. The BLM is seeking your comments on their proposal to remove “up to 25” young horses from the range starting this year.

Because BLM’s email system is inadequate to accept large volumes of correspondence they request that you send a snail mail letter. Please formulate a polite letter in your own words. Here are some points to make:

Lechuga’s Italian Restaurant in Denver to open kiosk on the 16th Street Mall

Corporate Lechuga’s is opening a second location (small kiosk) on the 16th Street Mall on May 1st, with a limited menu: Denver Canolis (sausage wrapped in pizza dough, then baked – imagine a sausage-link in a sleeping bag, open at both ends. They have been selling hundreds per day for years. The kiosk will also have chips and beverages, however, no spaghetti or pizza!
More later…

Lechuga’s, formerly Carbone’s Pizza was recently purchased by a restaurant syndicate, apparently to provide a preparation kitchen for the downtown location. Actually it’s more than apparent, two employees answered affirmatively when I asked the question. It’s also about selling more product at the Tejon location. Both locations will promote the other.

The current staff is great, however, LECHUGA’S HAS LOST IT’S SOUL!

The legendary Caribou Ranch property, iconic for its place in music recording history, has sold for $32.5 million, according to public records.

Music producer Jim Guercio and his family sold the 1,600-acre property to Indian Peaks Holdings LLC, which just filed as an entity with the Colorado Secretary of State’s office last month.

NEDERLAND — In its heyday during the 1970s and early ’80s, Caribou Ranch — tucked in a lush valley three miles north of this mountain town — was the “creative monastery” for some of the biggest names in the music business.

Songs such as “Philadelphia Freedom,” “Shining Star” and “New York State of Mind” were penned in Caribou’s cabins and on the ranch’s grounds.

More than 150 artists — including John Lennon, Michael Jackson and The Beach Boys — would record at Caribou’s state-of-the-art music studio before a fire silenced the barn-based recording operation on a cold day in March of ’85.

A quarter-century later, Caribou is on the brink of potentially the biggest change to come to the Peak to Peak Highway property since 1971, when James Guercio, a young and idealistic Chicago music producer, settled here to establish one of the first destination recording studios.

Efforts are underway to reopen the studio and vault Caribou to “Sundance” status read more…

Story by alan.prendergast@westword.com

It’s a lonely place now, a forlorn and mostly forgotten spot a half-mile west of the interstate and twelve miles north of Trinidad. Flanked by cottonwoods, surrounded by windswept prairie studded with piñon and tumbleweeds, it has an unfinished look, like a roadside attraction somebody started to build and then abandoned. NATIONAL TACO DAY SATURDAY OCTOBER 4TH, 2014!

National Taco Day

From NationalTacoDay.Com
“Last year Americans ate over 4.5 billion tacos!
That’s 490,000 miles of tacos, which could take you to the moon and back or, if you prefer, could, at 775-million pounds, equal the weight of two Empire State Buildings.”

“The word taco is the Mexican equivalent of the English word sandwich. The tortilla, which is made of corn or wheat, is wrapped or folded around a filling that is generally made of spiced proteins such as beef, pork or fish”
