I was “treated” to a showing of the new show ICE (replacing the long running show – SPLASH) at the Riviera Hotel Monday night. It was a good thing.
A clear plastic – floor to ceiling – stage left to stage right – curtain (yeah, it looked like a huge shower curtain) bathed in blue spots evoked a cool, icy image. Loud, soft-rock music played for about fifteen minutes when – like in the dim imagery of a dream – a gorgeous young women on three foot stilts, ice skates and flowing robes floated elegantly behind the curtain, dance-skating back and forth across the stage…Since the folds in the translucent curtain partially obscured her and her ambiguous image, the fantasy screamed perfection; this is not to say that this young lady wasn’t perfect…
After a while the show began in earnest with young women and men skating across the ice in various configurations and devices: acrobatic hand stands on high props, flips, splits etc. Comedic violin performances, balancing high on tettering geometric boxes and tubes, skate-dancing and flipping through the air from professional see-saw like boards – all on ice-skates, on ice – were executed perfectly by this troupe of young Russion performers…All the while an excellent trumpeter ran riffs underlining the entire show…
Elena Shpagina was the cherry on the icing of the cake…Her Hoop act (Hula type hoops) was executed perfectly; she really didn’t need the hoops; all she has to do is stand “there”…
