It was originally recorded by\u00a0<a title=\"Jackie Wilson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackie_Wilson\">Jackie Wilson<\/a>\u00a0for his album\u00a0<i><a title=\"Jackie Wilson discography\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackie_Wilson_discography#Albums\">Higher and Higher<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1967), produced by\u00a0<a title=\"Carl Davis (record producer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Davis_(record_producer)\">Carl Davis<\/a>, and became a Top 10 pop and number one R&amp;B hit.<sup id=\"cite_ref-rate_your_music_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/(Your_Love_Keeps_Lifting_Me)_Higher_and_Higher#cite_note-rate_your_music-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Rita Coolidge\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rita_Coolidge\">Rita Coolidge<\/a>\u00a0remade the song as &#8220;(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher&#8221; for her album\u00a0<i><a title=\"Anytime...Anywhere\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anytime...Anywhere\">Anytime&#8230;Anywhere<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1977). Her version has a more moderate tempo than that of the uptempo original, and largely omits the chorus which is evidenced only in the background vocals sung under the repetition of the first verse with which she closes the song. Coolidge and her sister\u00a0<a title=\"Priscilla Coolidge\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Priscilla_Coolidge\">Priscilla Coolidge<\/a>\u00a0had sung background on a version of the song for a prospective album by Priscilla&#8217;s husband\u00a0<a title=\"Booker T. Jones\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Booker_T._Jones\">Booker T. Jones<\/a>; when that album was shelved, Coolidge asked him if she could cut the song using his arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Released as a single, Coolidge&#8217;s version became her first major hit in nine years of recording: the track peaked at No. 2 on the\u00a0<i>Billboard<\/i>\u00a0Hot 100.
