April\u2019s full Moon rises on the night of Monday, April 26.\u00a0Traditionally called the Pink Moon, this full Moon will also be a spectacular supermoon! Here\u2019s everything you should know about the Moon this month, including facts, folklore, and Moon phase\u00a0dates.<\/p>\n

WHEN TO SEE THE FULL MOON IN APRIL\u00a02021<\/h3>\n

Venture outside on the night of\u00a0Monday, April 26<\/strong>, to catch a glimpse of April\u2019s full Pink Moon. This\u00a0full Moon\u2014which is the first of two\u00a0supermoons<\/strong>\u00a0this year\u2014will be visible after sunset and reach peak illumination at 11:33\u00a0P.M.\u00a0EDT.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the best view of this lovely spring Moon, find an open area and watch as the Moon\u00a0rises just above the horizon, at which point it will appear its biggest and take on a golden hue! (Find local Moon rise and set times here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

SUPER PINK MOON: THE FIRST SUPERMOON OF THE\u00a0YEAR<\/h3>\n

(Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Before you get your hopes up, this \u201cSuper Pink Moon\u201d won\u2019t actually look \u201csuper pink\u201d\u2014or any hue\u00a0of pink, really.\u00a0The Moon\u00a0will be its usual golden color near the horizon and fade\u00a0to a bright white as it glides\u00a0overhead!)<\/em><\/p>\n

This year, we\u2019ll be treated to two supermoons, with the first occurring on April 26 and the second on\u00a0May 26<\/a>.\u00a0Supermoons are said to be bigger and brighter than your average full\u00a0Moon.<\/p>\n

Just how big and how bright, exactly? On average, supermoons are about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full Moon. However,\u00a0unless you were to see a regular full Moon and a supermoon side by side in the sky, the difference is\u00a0very, very difficult to notice!\u00a0Learn more about supermoons here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

WHY IS IT CALLED THE PINK\u00a0MOON?<\/h3>\n

The full Moon names used by\u00a0The Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac<\/em>\u00a0come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not only to the\u00a0full\u00a0Moon.<\/p>\n

The Pink\u00a0Moon<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although we wish this name had to do with the color of the Moon, the reality is not quite as mystical or awe-inspiring. In truth, April\u2019s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms\u00a0of a certain\u00a0wildflower native to eastern North America:\u00a0Phlox subulata<\/em><\/a>\u2014commonly\u00a0called creeping phlox or moss phlox\u2014which also went by the name \u201cmoss\u00a0pink.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thanks to this\u00a0seasonal association, this full Moon came to be called the \u201cPink\u201d\u00a0Moon!<\/p>\n
