(The reason it&#8217;s rated 2 or 3 is because my top two are either tied for first place, or they&#8217;re rated 1 &#038; 2, I can&#8217;t decide.) <\/p>\n<p>The following video is the original<strong> Trailer<\/strong> for <strong>THE SEARCHERS<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<object width=\"318.75\" height=\"266.25\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4pdytUHdoYA&#038;hl=en\"><\/param><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4pdytUHdoYA&#038;hl=en\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" width=\"318.75\" height=\"266.25\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>I had been thinking about this movie for a while, as I usually do for a part of each year;  probably have since 1956.  One time, while watching <strong>John Wayne <\/strong>utter the phrase &#8220;<strong>That&#8217;l Be The Day<\/strong>&#8221; about a half-dozen times, I thought to myself: &#8220;<strong>UMMMM<\/strong>! <strong>1956<\/strong>! &#8211; <strong>That&#8217;l Be The Day<\/strong>!&#8221; &#8220;I&#8217;ll bet <strong>Buddy Holly <\/strong>was watching that movie back in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buddyhollycenter.org\/Info\/rentals.html\">Lubback, Texas<\/a> <\/strong> in <strong>1956<\/strong> and that phrase got stuck in his head, so he picked up his <strong>Fender<\/strong> [guitar] and wrote the song (<strong>That&#8217;l Be The Day<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>Well I finally found an internet article that mentions this idea: <a href=\"http:\/\/u2n2.com\/article.asp?id=33772\">&#8220;That&#8217;l Be the Day.&#8221;  The title and lyrical phrase, lifted from a line that <strong>John Wayne<\/strong> was always quoting in the <strong>John Ford<\/strong> movie <strong>The Searchers<\/strong>.<\/a>  Click the link and scroll down&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whiterose.org\/howlingcurmudgeons\/archives\/010928.html\">Here is another link that mentions it;<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/classicfilm.about.com\/od\/westerns\/fr\/TheSearchers.htm\">and another<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Other articles state that the British group: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-searchers.co.uk\/\">THE SEARCHERS<\/a><\/strong>  (<strong>Needles and Pins &#038; Love Potion Number 9<\/strong>, just to name two of their mega-hit songs.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-searchers.co.uk\/60-70.htm\">  took their name from the movie.<\/a>  This information is from <strong>The Searchers&#8217; <\/strong>[band] website&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Coasters\">COASTERS<\/a><\/strong> <strong>1957<\/strong> R&#038;R hit: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Searchin%27\">SEARCHIN&#8217;<\/a><\/strong>, by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leiber_and_Stoller\">Leiber and Stoller<\/a> <\/strong>on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atco_Records\">Atco Records<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; I&#8217;m betting &#8211; is also somewhere in the mix.   I can&#8217;t confirm this hypothetical yet.  If I can, I&#8217;ll post it here.<\/p>\n<p>My Top Two Westerns?  In alphabetical order:  <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0044706\/\">HIGH NOON<\/a><\/strong> , starring:  <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0044706\/\">Gary Cooper, Lloyd Bridges, Grace Kelly, Katy Jurado and Ian MacDonald,<\/a><\/strong> released <strong>7 July 1952 <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0046303\/\">SHANE<\/a><\/strong>, starring: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0046303\/\">Allan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin, Brandon De Wilde, Jack Palance and Ben Johnson,<\/a><\/strong> released <strong>September 24, 1953<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>A bit of irony exsists in the juxtaposition of two of the movies which are mentioned in this post:  <strong>John Wayne<\/strong> had big problems with the politics of <strong>High Noon<\/strong>;  he felt that there was a strong, leftist,  message in the film.  Some refer to the movie as an &#8220;anti-<strong>McCarthyism<\/strong> western.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000078\/bio\">&#8220;Although he complained that <strong>High Noon <\/strong>(<strong>1952<\/strong>) was &#8220;un-American&#8221;, when he collected <strong>Gary Cooper&#8217;s <\/strong>Oscar on his behalf, he also complained that he wasn&#8217;t offered the part himself.&#8221; <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few reasons why these films are rated so highly in my book:<\/p>\n<p>The following clip includes the final gunfight in SHANE:<br \/>\n<strong>Alan Ladd&#8217;s <\/strong>character <strong>SHANE<\/strong> &#8220;calls out&#8221;  hired gunfighter <strong>Jack Wilson<\/strong> (<strong>Jack Palance<\/strong>) in the saloon, after a long, emotion-building-ride into town.  With one of cinema&#8217;s most memorable, provocative lines, <strong>Shane<\/strong> responds to <strong>Wilson&#8217;s<\/strong><strong> query: &#8220;What have you heard <\/strong><strong>Shane<\/strong> (about me)?&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong> &#8220;I&#8217;ve heard that you&#8217;re a low-down Yankee liar.&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><object width=\"318.75\" height=\"266.25\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/AFquzxwYoeE&#038;hl=en\"><\/param><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/AFquzxwYoeE&#038;hl=en\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" width=\"318.75\" height=\"266.25\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>This is a clip from <strong>HIGH NOON.<\/strong> It is the slow-paced, methodic, (opening) <strong>Title Sequence<\/strong>:  The Miller Gang assembles to ride into town to meet the <strong>High Noon Train <\/strong>carrying &#8220;Boss <strong>*Frank Miller<\/strong>&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0531756\/\">Ian MacDonald<\/a>,) just released from prison and seeking revenge from the sheriff (<strong>Gary Cooper<\/strong>) who put him there.  Underscoring the entire clip and most of the movie is the brilliant, haunting song,  &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0044706\/soundtrack\">High Noon<\/a><\/strong>,&#8221;  sung by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0728811\/\">Tex Ritter <\/a><\/strong> (the late <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/find?s=all&#038;q=john+ritter&#038;x=15&#038;y=11\">John Ritter&#8217;s <\/a><\/strong>father.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0006323\/\">The music is by <strong>Dimitri Tiomkin<\/strong><\/a> and  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0913513\/\">the lyrics are by <strong>Ned Washington<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"318.75\" height=\"266.25\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QKLvKZ6nIiA&#038;hl=en\"><\/param><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/QKLvKZ6nIiA&#038;hl=en\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" wmode=\"transparent\" width=\"318.75\" height=\"266.25\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000081\/\">NATALIE WOOD&#8217;S<\/a><\/strong> younger sister, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0939836\/\">LANA WOOD<\/a> <\/strong>played the young <strong>Debbie Edwards<\/strong> in<strong> THE SEARCHERS<\/strong>.  The searchers were searching &#8211; all the while &#8211; for <strong>Debbie Edwards<\/strong>&#8230;<br \/>\nThe Cinematographer for <strong>HIGH NOON <\/strong>was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0005677\/\"><strong>Floyd Crosby<\/strong><\/a>, who was the father of Rock and Roll&#8217;r <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/find?s=all&#038;q=david+crosby&#038;x=16&#038;y=2\"><strong>David Crosby<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\nFrom the movie <strong>SHANE<\/strong>:  &#8220;<strong>YOU SPEAKING TO ME<\/strong>&#8221; says <strong>SHANE<\/strong> to provacateur <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/character\/ch0012846\/\">Chris Calloway<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0424565\/\">(Ben Johnson)<\/a> <\/strong> before the gunfight in the saloon (see video clip.) <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/You_talkin'_to_me%3F\"><br \/>\n&#8220;<strong>YOU TALKING TO ME<\/strong>&#8221; says <strong>Robert De Niro<\/strong>, talking to the mirror, <\/a> in the movie <strong>TAXI DRIVER <\/strong>( <strong>1976<\/strong>.) <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Talk:You_talkin%27_to_me%3F\">Here&#8217;s a bit of conjecture: The line originated from 1) The Twilight Zone 2) Shane 3) De Niro&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>*[The <strong>Ian MacDonald<\/strong> character, <strong>Frank Miller<\/strong> scared the heck out of me the first time I saw the movie &#8211; still does!
