| A few years ago the MGM/Mirage Corporation was formed when MGM did a hostile takeover and acquired The Mirage. Now The Mirage is part of that company. | ||||||||||||||||
| Big time gambler, Steve Weinberg - AKA Steve Wynn - built this baby in the late 80s. The opening of this hotel was an open window onto the possibilities of what could be. It was a very exciting time in Las Vegas. This is to say nothing of Weinberg leading the assault on the destruction of old Vegas. Was it a good thing or was it not such a good thing. wc | ||||||||||||||||
| When this hotel opened there was an extra charge of energy in Las Vegas, especially in the evening when the Volcano was erupting (see photo above.) Throngs of pedestrians lined the sidewalks - on both sides of Las Vegas Boulevard - magnetized by the sights and sounds of the fiery Volcano. It was a good thing. | ||||||||||||||||

"Wynn had previously acquired interests in various existing casinos. His first major Strip casino, The Mirage, which opened in 1989, set a new standard for size and lavishness, with construction costs to match. The Mirage featured an indoor forest and an outdoor "volcano", and with high-quality room appointments and an emphasis on service, The Mirage was another great success. The Mirage was the first project in which he was involved in the design and construction of a casino. The $630 million cost to build The Mirage was financed largely with junk bonds issued by Michael Milken. The Mirage was considered a risky venture by the standards then prevailing in Las Vegas because of its high cost and emphasis on luxury. However, it proved to be enormously successful and made Wynn a major part of Las Vegas history." Read more from Wiki... |

The Volcano (several times nightly, weather permitting) is a spectacular production of an eruption of a volcano, with sounds, fire and a lot of heat. The short -15-minute "performance" is impressive, especially for first-timers. Exposed pipes, tubes etc. (vessels that carry the gasses used to fuel flames,) just below the water's surface are a bit distracting if you get too close. So stand back a bit. All n' all, it's better to have a 'pipe showing,' spewing volcano than no spewing volcano at all. |
||||||||||||||||
| The Volcano is in front of the property on Las Vegas Blvd. | ||||||||||||||||
| The Volcano spews nightly, on the hour from 7:00 pm until midnight. | ||||||||||||||||
| The Mirage is a cool, exotic Hotel Casino - truly a masterpiece. One does not want to leave this sanctuary readily. There always seems to be more to explore, see or do at the Mirage. | ||||||||||||||||

The hotel rooms are tidy and well appointed, however you'll feel like you hit the JACKPOT when you hit the pool. Hang out under the waterfall of this World Class swimming pool and make the world go away for a while. |

| CRAVINGS BUFFET | ||||||||||||||||
| Most opinion polls rate this buffet quite high - usually in the top10... | ||||||||||||||||
| "Follow the intriguing aroma into a contemporary village of savory world flavors. Celebrate the art of eating in a visually appetizing scene designed by Adam Tihany and experience eleven cooking stations, a street of restaurants and an array of tempting elements. Only at Cravings – the ultimate buffet dining experience." [Excerpt is from The Mirage's website.] | ||||||||||||||||

Of course, this is one of the better buffets in Las Vegas. This new buffet cost between $12 million and $14 million (according to a LV rag that was found on a city bus. [200?) |
