Spotlight on Romano’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria in Littleton, Colorado

Soup's On

It’s becoming more difficult to find a traditional Italian restaurant that serves (thick) homemade spaghetti with a robust, rich, red sauce (cooked for hours in a big pot) like Mom used to make. Romano’s Restaurant is one of those restaurants, and it’s authentically Italian.

On South Windermere street in Littleton, Romano’s is a cozy family restaurant & pizzeria. It’s been there since 1967. The area has turned into an artsy village, of sorts.
Pastas, Chicken and Veal dishes, Baked Entrées, Combination plates, House Specialties, plus Pizza and Calzones, Sandwiches, Soups, Salads and Appetizers are also on the menu.
A Spaghetti (thick homemade or thin noodles) dinner with choice of: meatballs, sausage or mushrooms, served with bread and butter, and a decent salad goes for about $10.95. The portions are large and your server will cheerfully bring an extra cup of the tangy red sauce should you need it. Beer and wine are available.

You can view the full menu at Romano’s website…

Before the Denver Broncos, the Rockies, the Nuggets, or the AVS, and before LODO was named LODO, before the 16th Street Mall, even before Larimer Square was Larimer Square there was: The National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. It was Cow Town’s Main-Event-Of-The-Year, the Big Enchilada, the Moneymaker. It was the reason Denverites left Christmas decorations up well past News Years Day. In fact the lights & Santas remained until the closing of the Stock Show. Cow Town’s citizens wanted to give thanks and show their appreciation for all the money the cowboys and Stock Show people brought to town so they left the welcome lights on. More lights, more money… Sort of like painting the town Bronco Blue and Orange these days.

The National Western Stock Show is basically a meat sale. One of the high-end-steak-houses will bid, win and buy the Blue Ribbon Steer. After a reasonable amount of time, you will be able to order a piece of it – right off the menu. You’ll also be dining – around town – on beef-burgers, bison-burgers and steak n’ eggs obtained from the competition’s winners and losers…

The WORLD-CLASS Rodeo is a promotional event – promoting the sale of the meat and fowl. This is not meant to demote the Rodeo. It is a first rate event. The LasVegasBuffetClub recommends that you put on your boots & hat and make a day of it: go down into the pens and checkout the livestock and exhibits, then watch the rodeo! Check out the: Arabian Cutting Horses, Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza, African-American Heritage Rodeo, National Western’s Super Dogs, Western Art Exhibit and Sale and more…

I “happened” on to a colorful sight a few years ago, as Portillos was in the process of preparing another restaurant opening – in Buena Park, CA. A sign said “Grand Opening Tomorrow” so I made it a point to return. I did and it was a veritable circus – jam packed with customers and staff at the business of food. More precisely, the business of hot-dog-type-food: Chicago Hot Dogs. “HOT DOG…2.45 – With everything includes: mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed buncheck out the full menu…

TEMPEST STORM – Still Stripping After All These Years.

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

In the 50s my cousin Bobby and I (in our 10s) were major fans of the exotic dancer Tempest Storm. Her photo was often in the local paper advertising her act. We were afficionados of the ecdysiast. Tempest Storm and the late Betty Page were among the favorite, famous, fantasy figures of male adolecence. Maybe even ahead of Ted Williams (Boston Red Sox,) albeit a different fantasy altogether.
Tempest Storm was a 50s – 60s Striptease Artist who worked for a time at Denver’s Tropics Nightclub, as well as many other venues around the world. In her 80s now, she is still stripping after all these years, in Las Vegas.

Christmas time is the best time to hang out at Charlie Brown’s Bar and Grill.
Denver’s only real-deal “BIG CITY HOTEL TAVERN” fancies up real good at Christmas time with Boughs of Holly and Spruce, colored lights and other holiday accoutrements.

The piano-bar is alive with patrons singing Christmas favorites, starting at 6:00 pm. This tavern has Spirits of all sorts…IT’S ALIVE…

Friday nights swing with a 3:00 to 6:30 Happy Hour – drink specials and complementary wings.

Charlie Brown’s is in that “famous” Denver hotel where the likes of local Denver beatnik Neal Cassady, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg hung out in the 50s. Are they still hanging out here? Click the LasVegasBuffetClub link (bottom) for more information on Cassady, Kerouac and Ginsberg…

Little Man Ice Cream in Denver, Colorado “can.”

Little Man Ice Cream in Denver...
This fine photo is from Westword magazine. FYI: The photo has a copper-cast. The actual color is pewter.

A Denver gem, just on the outskirts of downtown Denver, Little Man Ice Cream is housed in a perfectly scaled and finished, vintage, Cream-Can building. Reminiscent of 1940’s – 50’s Hot Dog or Donut stands which were built to look like an old shoe or a piece of food, this Cream-Can is fashioned from welded steel then finished to look just like the real thing. The thing is, the Cream-Can is a perfect representation. This hip piece of pop-art has a Ghirardelli Square vibe – eventhough it’s just one small building! Yea, I know…

“Little Man Ice Cream is located at the corner of 30th & Tejon… across the Highland Bridge at the end of 16th Street.”

“Little Man Ice Cream will be more than just an ice cream shop! We will be
making our own ice creams created by chefs. We will use only hormone-free
and organic ingredients when available. We will also make our own ice cream
bars and sandwiches. Every flavor will be unique and incredible!”

This information is from Little Man’s website.

From the Care2 Petitionsite:

“The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to kill America’s wild horses rather than effectively manage our wild natural heritage.”

“BLM claims it can no longer afford to round up wild horses and confine them until it finds people to adopt them, and the agency wants to euthanize these majestic wild beauties or sell them to the highest bidder “without limitation” – meaning sell them to anyone, even if the bidder also plans to kill these horses.” read more…

“Crow has lent her support to the Cloud Foundation, a Colorado-based organization dedicated to preserving wild horses on the range and to finding homes for those already in captivity.”
“In a backstage interview, Crow summed up the urgency of the moment, “33,000 horses are being held right now by the BLM and due to budgetary problems, they’re saying now they can’t afford to feed them, which is kind of a great excuse to exterminate them.”

CAPE CORAL, FLORIDA
Columbus Day Parade draws thousands to downtown Cape Coral
At the stroke of 5 this afternoon, Cape Coral police motorcycles blared sirens and drove east on Southeast 47th Terrace, kicking off the city’s annual Columbus Day Parade.
Thousands of people lined the downtown street, parallel to main thoroughfare Cape Coral Parkway, and took in the sights and sounds of the parade — a Cape Coral tradition for more than 25 years.
“We try to promote the Italian culture in Cape Coral,” said Salvatore Cossentino, president of the Charles J. Bonaparte Sons of Italy Lodge 2504 of Cape Coral, which organized the event. “There are a large number of Italian constituencies here, and we hope people look foward every year to the Columbus Day Parade.”
The most common sights at the parade were American flags, followed closely by Italian flags.
But with the presidential election just a little more than three weeks away, the event also took on a decidedly political tone. About halfway through the 40-minute parade were three cars bearing large signs for the Republican presidential ticket, Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
About five minutes behind them were three other vehicles bearing large signs for the Democratic candidates, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware.
Several other cars featured candidates for local offices.
“It was very political,” said Tia Janssen, 38, of Cape Coral, who was watching the event with her husband, Michael, 43. “I wasn’t expecting that.”
“It’s going to be an important election, very close,” said Pam Bergstrasser, 64, of Cape Coral, who was with her husband, Dennis, 60, at the parade. “There are so many opinions.”
For the first time, the parade featured the Italian Food Festival afterward. That appeared to boost the parade’s attendance.
“I think it’s phenomenal,” Cossentino said of the attendannce at the festival early in the evening. “It’s kind of what we expected, but it’s even more than we expected so far.”
The Sons of Italy Lodge 2507 of Port Charlotte also took part in the Cape parade.
“As brothers and sisters in the lodges, we try to support one another’s parades, socials and charities,” said Ronald Radenz, president of the Port Charlotte lodge read more…

DENVER, COLORADO
Denver Parade News:
Protesters do not plan to interfere with the Columbus Day Parade on Saturday as they have in previous years.
A leader of the movement to end the Columbus Day parade, said Thursday that lawyers for the protesters need a break.
The same lawyers who defended the Columbus Day protesters last year – when 83 people were arrested – also represented some of the same people after arrests during the Democratic National Convention.
“That’s thousands of dollars worth of legal work that’s done for us. You have to be respectful of their time and their resources,” Spagnuolo said.
The Columbus Day parade begins at 10 a.m. at Court Place and 15th Street. It follows a route that circles about a half- dozen blocks and ends on Broadway.
George Vendegnia, who heads the parade committee, said he can do without protests.
“That would be nice,” he said.
Opponents will rally instead near the Capitol before the parade, Spagnuolo said.
Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said, “We’ll be adequately staffed for the parade.”
Jackson said the opponents don’t have a parade permit, but noted they don’t need one as long as their activities remain on the sidewalk.
