FullPinkMoon

April’s full Moon rises on the night of Monday, April 26. Traditionally called the Pink Moon, this full Moon will also be a spectacular supermoon! Here’s everything you should know about the Moon this month, including facts, folklore, and Moon phase dates.

WHEN TO SEE THE FULL MOON IN APRIL 2021

Venture outside on the night of Monday, April 26, to catch a glimpse of April’s full Pink Moon. This full Moon—which is the first of two supermoons this year—will be visible after sunset and reach peak illumination at 11:33 P.M. EDT.

For the best view of this lovely spring Moon, find an open area and watch as the Moon rises just above the horizon, at which point it will appear its biggest and take on a golden hue! (Find local Moon rise and set times here.)

SUPER PINK MOON: THE FIRST SUPERMOON OF THE YEAR

(Note: Before you get your hopes up, this “Super Pink Moon” won’t actually look “super pink”—or any hue of pink, really. The Moon will be its usual golden color near the horizon and fade to a bright white as it glides overhead!)

This year, we’ll be treated to two supermoons, with the first occurring on April 26 and the second on May 26. Supermoons are said to be bigger and brighter than your average full Moon.

Just how big and how bright, exactly? On average, supermoons are about 7% bigger and about 15% brighter than a typical full Moon. However, unless you were to see a regular full Moon and a supermoon side by side in the sky, the difference is very, very difficult to notice! Learn more about supermoons here.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE PINK MOON?

The full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not only to the full Moon.

The Pink Moon

Although we wish this name had to do with the color of the Moon, the reality is not quite as mystical or awe-inspiring. In truth, April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink.”

Thanks to this seasonal association, this full Moon came to be called the “Pink” Moon!

Locals look forward to buffets reopening in Clark County

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

The pandemic forced a lot of places to stop the service, but in a few weeks, Clark County will allow buffets to continue again.

Alexandra and Tremaine Johnson love visiting buffets. In fact, it was a weekly ritual for the Las Vegas couple.

“It is easy so we don’t have to pick what the other one wants to eat,” said Alexandra Johnson. “And I am a picky eater, I can eat what I like,” added Tremaine Johnson.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          COVID-19 shut a lot of self-serving buffets down, putting a stop to one of the things Las Vegas is famous for.

But there is good news: Clark County says buffets can open again starting May 1. “Just going to the other buffets their deserts are different everyone offers something different, so it is exciting to be out and be free again,” said Tremaine Johnson. However, some in the food business say they will still be taking precautions.

Pam Howatt owns a catering business, and although 95% of her events were canceled during the pandemic, her team made sure the buffets she did have were safe.

“So they still get the same choices they still get the quantities of what they want but we serve it for them so only we handle their plate until it gets to the end,” Howatt said.

It is a new method to the traditional buffet style that Howatt says she will keep.

“I don’t t think everyone handling the same utensil over and over again is a good option now that we have gone through all this,” Howatt said.

As for the Johnson’s, they say they will go to the first buffet that opens up.

As for the big casinos and hotels, 8 News Now did reach out to Wynn, MGM and Caesars Entertainment, but we have not heard anything on what their plans are to resume buffet services.

Death in the West
Death in the West

From The NewYorker.com
“A century ago, Butte, Montana, a.k.a. Dashiell Hammett’s Poisonville, was the rowdy epicenter of American copper mining; these days, it’s a source of excellent local-history podcasts. “Richest Hill” alchemized a toxic-waste saga into riveting entertainment; the new, independently produced series “Death in the West” unspools the story of the murder of the martyred union organizer Frank Little—still regarded by many as a “recently passed comrade”—in 1917, when Butte was “a city tailor-made for conspiracy and mayhem.” Reported, written, and hosted by Chad and Zach Dundas and Erika and Leif Fredrickson, the series employs rigorous reporting, memorable details (a hook-handed gunman, a Prohibition-era speakeasy), and sophisticated sound design (cemetery crickets, archival interviews and songs), as well as local flavor: music by Montana bands, support from a record store and an ice-cream shop.”
