With the legalization of the sale of marijuana coming into effect in Colorado on January 1st, everyone in the Centennial State has been getting ready for the bloodshot eyes of the nation to be on them. In that spirit, the Denver Post has hired a marijuana editor, and their introductory interview with him is pretty amazing.
Ricardo Baca, who covered entertainment and music for the newspaper for the past twelve years, will be taking over the post. He seems pretty excited.
Does he smoke weed?
“The short answer: I’ve covered concerts for a living over the last 15 years. That means hanging out with musicians, working with people in the industry, attending music festivals in Austin and the Coachella valley and New York and L.A. So yes.
Will he share the “beat” with the other reporters in the newsroom?
My colleagues who first approached me about this job told me that I will have access to reporters throughout the newsroom, and the entire staff knows that this is our biggest initiative for the coming year. Best of all, the staff wants to be involved because we’re all professional journalists and this behemoth of a story is the real deal.

David Yeagley is the great-great-grandson of Comanche leader Bad Eagle.
Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), who sailed for Spain in 1492, at the age of 41.
Of course, the liberal tradition capitalizes on condemnation and lamentation, therefore, Columbus is a major target. The entire “plight” of the Western Hemisphere is romantically (and immaturely) blamed on the adventures of Cristóbal Colón (1451-1506).
But let’s examine a few major points of interest regarding the man and his times.
1. Columbus never met an American Indian. The Taino and Carib Indians (of the islands Columbus landed on) were Arawak, from Venezuela. American Indian protest is a bit misguided, therefore. After all, it is not Arawak, Aztec, or Eskimo who are named in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States. It is the American Indian. None other.
Yes, Columbus misnamed the people he encountered. Having never traveled east, to the Orient, he had not accurate idea of the what the Hindu people looked like. He initially assumed he has landed on India’s shores.
Of course he wasn’t the first non-American Indian person to land in the American continent. Everyone’s claiming that status these days, like the Chinese, the Africans, the Muslims, etc. (Never mind the Vikings, or even the Irish!) It is a circus of historical theory at this point. What Columbus did was map out a route that could be re-traveled by others, (at least Europeans). For that, he is indeed responsible.
2. As in the case of many great men, men of galactic vision, Columbus was imprisoned by his own government. In October of 1500, nearly eight years to the day since is first Western landing, Columbus, already in chains at the end of this Third Voyage, was jailed in the southwestern Spanish port of Cádiz. He was mocked, and considered, by his own government, a tyrannist in the New World.
His physical sufferings during the Second Voyage, including everything from dysentery to gout and Reiter’s syndrome, to occasional blindness. He lay bed-fast for months, during times which should have been triumphant for him.
The natural discouragement of illness and physical misery, plus the heaven-daring irony which Castile seemed determine to inflict upon it’s greatest hero, must have been nigh unbearable. Only a giant of a man could endure such conflict, personal and physical. – Read more from the Bad Eagle Website:

Probably the slickest and best liquor advertising campaign in the history of liquor, advertising or even campaigns in general is – the marketing of the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s White Lightning. How cool is that? What American wouldn’t drink a glass of White Lightning? Who cares if the American haters, who would call these fine folk dumb-hicks or hillbillies, don’t get the importance or meaning of this legendary family, or don’t get the fact that the terms hillbilly and hick are not necessarily negative. New Yorkers have to invent a lifestyle; these people from the Appalachian mountains actually live life. Their roots run deep in the fabric of America. I’ve got to do research to see if that lackluster TV series The Hatfields and McCoys with Kevin Costner was just a lead-up to the ad campaign for The Hatfields and McCoys: White Lightning. *Was the TV show American Pickers the genesis?

August is the month of the Full Sturgeon Moon. Some Native American tribes knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full Moon. Others called it the Green Corn Moon or the Grain Moon.

"But wait a minute," you may ask. "Isn't a Blue Moon defined as the second full moon that occurs during a calendar month? Tuesday’s full moon will be the only full moon of August 2013. So how can we call it a 'Blue' moon?"

Over the years, since the beginning of rock & roll – in the 50s, I’ve personally known people who are experts in the field. No one knows the business like Rollye James. Mention a few facts or whistle a tune and this dynamo will tell you the name of the song, who the artist is, who wrote it, who the musicians are, and she’ll name the label to boot. By the way MS James is also politically astute. These are the ingredients for cooking up a show for radio. And Rollye James is cooking again, on the air, one more time. My name was Antonio West (Antonio Santiago) and I was the 13-month old child who was shot at point blank range by two black teens who were attempting to rob my mother, who was also shot. A Grand Jury of my mommy’s peers from Brunswick GA determined the teens who murdered me will not face the death penalty…too bad I was given a death sentence for being innocent and defenseless.
My family made the mistake of being white in a 73% non-white neighborhood, but my murder was not ruled a Hate Crime. Nor did President Obama take so much as a single moment to acknowledge my murder.
I am one of the youngest murder victims in our great Nation’s history, but the media doesn’t care to cover the story of my tragic demise, President Obama has no children who could possibly look like me – so he doesn’t care and the media doesn’t care because my story is not interesting enough to bring them ratings so they can sell commercial time slots.
There is not a white equivalent of Al Sharpton because if there was he would be declared racist, so there is no one rushing to Brunswick GA to demand justice for me. There is no White Panther party to put a bounty on the lives of those who murdered me. I have no voice, I have no representation and unlike those who shot me in the face while I sat innocently in my stroller – I no longer have my life.
So while you are seeking justice for Treyvon, please remember to seek justice for me too. Tell your friends about me, tell you families, get tee shirts with my face on them and make the world pay attention, just like you did for Treyvon[.]

The jury in the George Zimmerman murder case found the defendant not guilty on all charges in the death of Trayvon Martin.
The all-female panel began deliberations Friday afternoon. Shortly after receiving the case jury members requested a full inventory of evidence presented during the trial, which led some to speculate the jury was preparing for a long haul.
Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer, was charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, in a Sanford, Fla., gated community. Judge Debra Nelson ruled that the jury could also convict Zimmerman of the lesser crime of manslaughter.
Much of the trial, which began June 24, has revolved around opposing accounts of the prosecution and defense regarding whether Zimmerman or Martin was the aggressor in the altercation that led to the shooting. Attorneys also argued over whether the escalating confrontation was intense or threatening enough to support Zimmerman’s claim that he shot Martin in self-defense. Read more…
