Military service comes in many forms: Storming a beach in Europe, cradling a child after a hurricane, sealing seams on barrage balloons.

After the Civil War, many Americans began to honor soldiers killed in the line of service with ceremonies in the spring, when flowers could be picked and laid on their graves. In 1868, a group of Union veterans established Decoration Day, the predecessor of Memorial Day, declared a Federal holiday by Congress in 1971.

Although Memorial Day has its roots in the Civil War, it now honors deceased veterans of all U.S. wars. This Memorial Day, we’ve compiled photos from 1863 to the present in recognition of the men and women who have served their country. Visit Gallery

TAKE ACTION!

Background. The Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range (PMWHR is a spectacular wilderness but a high percentage of the 39,651 acres is rocky and unproductive for grazing. The herd now exceeds 160 adult horses. Without range expansion which TCF actively pursues, there must be some limited removals to ensure that the range continues to support the herd. There are no livestock on the range. The BLM is seeking your comments on their proposal to remove “up to 25” young horses from the range starting this year.

Because BLM’s email system is inadequate to accept large volumes of correspondence they request that you send a snail mail letter. Please formulate a polite letter in your own words. Here are some points to make:

Lechuga’s Italian Restaurant in Denver to open kiosk on the 16th Street Mall

Corporate Lechuga’s is opening a second location (small kiosk) on the 16th Street Mall on May 1st, with a limited menu: Denver Canolis (sausage wrapped in pizza dough, then baked – imagine a sausage-link in a sleeping bag, open at both ends. They have been selling hundreds per day for years. The kiosk will also have chips and beverages, however, no spaghetti or pizza!
More later…

Lechuga’s, formerly Carbone’s Pizza was recently purchased by a restaurant syndicate, apparently to provide a preparation kitchen for the downtown location. Actually it’s more than apparent, two employees answered affirmatively when I asked the question. It’s also about selling more product at the Tejon location. Both locations will promote the other.

The current staff is great, however, LECHUGA’S HAS LOST IT’S SOUL!

Think you know great sex?

Nevada’s famed Moonlite Bunny Ranch brothel is on the prowl for official “quality” control testers who not only get paid to have sex with their prostitutes but to then evaluate their performance.

“I’m looking for someone who’s fun, has some personality and wants to have a good time,” Dennis Hof, whose seven brothels make up 40% of North America’s legal bordellos and starred in the hit HBO series “Cathouse,” told the Daily News.

The ideal candidate must have “stamina” as well, he added.

“Are they going to be able to perform? Because it’s work. Not everyone is a Ron Jeremy,” he said while mentioning the legendary porn star who touts himself as “the Hardest Man in Showbiz.”

Ranch spokesman Marc Medoff also stressed their “secret shopers”[sic] as needing to be experienced, educated, and “well rounded.”

“Obviously a very young person or a person who has not traveled or been around would not be ideal,” he said. “We want somebody who gives us a true, honest, worldly perspective.”

That includes female applicants.

“We’d love to have a woman or two,” he said. “Even couples to be honest with you. A lot of our customers are couples.” read more

Friday’s Trifecta: Supermoon, Solar Eclipse, Spring Equinox

Solar Eclipse
Solar Eclipse

Story from NationalGeographic.com
By Andrew Fazekas, National Geographic
PUBLISHED MARCH 18, 2015

This week sees a rare combo of total solar eclipse, perigee moon, and the first day of spring.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon comes between Earth and the sun, casting a lunar shadow onto the Earth’s surface along a narrow, 62-mile-wide (100-kilometer) path. Because this “black hole” effect lasts for only a couple of minutes, totality ends up being a truly rare event for any single spot on Earth—occurring about once every three centuries for each geographical location.

Friday’s eclipse will race across remote regions of the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, so only a relatively few lucky souls will be able to see it. But people in large parts of Europe and in northern areas of Africa and Asia will get to enjoy at least a partial solar disappearing act.

Adding to the uniqueness of the total eclipse, it falls on the vernal equinox, which officially occurs at 22:45 GMT (6:45 p.m. EDT) and marks the beginning of spring. While the occurrence of an eclipse on the equinox is considered a cyclical event and is not that rare, this celestial combination won’t occur again until 2034 read more…

With no shortage of sadness, we can confirm that our doors will close at noon on May 4, 2015. We greatly appreciate the expressions of fondness and loyalty for ‘The Riv’ from our guests since ground first broke in 1954 and through the years. More importantly we want to acknowledge and applaud our associates who have worked to create enduring memories for all of our guests. This is what will be remembered long after the walls have come down. We look forward to making the coming weeks fun, exciting and memorable.

More to come…

Pathologically Political Paul McCartney Picked the Wrong Pony to Run with at Grammys.

8:49 PM Update (below)

McCartney & West
McCartney & West

Paul McCartney needs to call out jackass, Kanye West and insist that he apologize to Beck, the Grammys and to the general public… Then West should be banned from all awards shows for 5-years.

One reader says:
“Really and it’s not racial? Taylor Swift and Beck are white bread and mayonnaise. Also, It’s doubtful that Kanye West would show that level of disrespect to someone like Springsteen or Tom Petty.” He seems to pick on those who are slight of build.

C’mon McCartney, DO THE RIGHT THING
———————————————————————–

More thoughts on the Grammys:

AC/DCs Highway to Hell was extremely strong, power, power, power… I’m still not sure how one gets a “Season ticket on a one way ride.” Oh well it doesn’t matter I’m giving them a pass.
LL Cool J hosted the awards show more like he was calling a wrestling match or hosting a cheap rock & roll show in the 70s. “MAKE SOME NOISE” “I CAN’T HEAR YA'” Very little class…
Madonna – Less is more
Annie Lennox – Killed it! Very appealing…
TONY BENNETT AND LADY GAGA – added old-time class…
Pharrell Williams – Can’t help but being Happy! Seems like a nice guy but what’s with the “Call For Philip Morris” outfit?…

The secret Sinatra past of Bob Dylan’s new album

Bob Dylan has a new album coming out Feb. 3, “Shadows in the Night,” a collection of pop songs about romance, heartbreak and other existential themes written by other songwriters.

But whatever you call this labor-of-love project, there’s one thing Bob Dylan does not want you to call it: his “Sinatra covers album.”

These are old songs, written between the early 1920s and the early 1960s, some of which have become bona fide jazz standards (“Autumn Leaves”), others of which were minor hits when they were first recorded (“Full Moon and Empty Arms”), and there’s even the odd gem (“Stay With Me”) that has been overlooked by audiences since its first appearance on an obscure single.

All these songs have one thing in common: They were recorded by Frank Sinatra at some point (in some cases, several points) in his career.

“I don’t see myself as covering these songs in any way,” Dylan said in a statement last December. “They’ve been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.” Read more…
