Full Worm Moon – March “As the temperature begins to warm and the ground begins to thaw, earthworm casts appear, heralding the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this Moon as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night.’
‘The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. To the settlers, it was also known as the Lenten Moon, and was considered to be the last full Moon of winter.”
Full Moon Names and Their Meanings
“With the Stardust and Riviera and La Concha and El Morocco, the Thunderbird, the El Rancho — that area used to be as nice as anything,” Doumani said. “Over the years, everything shifted south. The north end of the Strip, really, used to be the center of the Strip, but things got neglected over time.”

For the past three decades, Leon Boghossian has visited Las Vegas about twice a year.
The Rhode Island resident has seen many changes to the city during that time, but is particularly impressed with what’s happening now at the north end of the Strip.
“There’s a lot going on in this area,” said Boghossian, walking north on Las Vegas Boulevard near Resorts World Drive. “The changes, in my opinion, have been all positive. It’s really great to see.”
As he talked, construction sounds could be heard to the west as workers labored on the $4 billion, 59-story Resorts World Las Vegas project, which is being built on the site formerly occupied by the Stardust.
*
To the east, Boghossian could see work being done on a $935 million expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The project, which will also feature a renovation of the existing space, will cost $1.5 billion and be complete in early 2021.
A short walk to the north of where Boghossian stood sits Circus Circus, the family-themed former MGM Resorts International property that is in the process of being sold to Treasure Island owner Phil Ruffin for $825 million.

Details on the “Circa Sports Million” football contest are still being worked out, but Mike Palm shared some details on VSiN this week.
Casino operator and developer Derek Stevens (pictured) is launching a new sportsbook operation in downtown Las Vegas on June 1. Circa Sports was recently approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board to operate in Nevada. The new sportsbook operation will serve Stevens’ casinos:
The first Circa Sports sportsbook taking wagers is opening at the Golden Gate on June 1. Another one of Derek Stevens’ casinos, The D Las Vegas, will be opening its Circa Sports sportsbook closer to the end of June. Lastly, the namesake Circa Las Vegas is scheduled to open in December 2020. When it opens, the new sportsbook will have the largest sportsbook TV screen in the world.
*
Circa Sports might expand beyond these properties and the state of Nevada in the future but the plan is to focus on their own casinos.
Circa Sports is the first new sportsbook operator to open in Nevada in more than five years.
The “Circa Sports Million” will be a handicapping contest similar to the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest. The entry fee will be $1,000 and contestants will pick five pro football games against the spread every week.
The grand prize is guaranteed to be $1,000,000 regardless of how many people enter the contest. Getting 1,000 people to sign up for a new contest won’t be easy. As Palm said to VSiN, it’s entirely possible there will be an overlay since this is the first year of the Circa Sports Million.
There will be approximately $1.5 million in total prizes in the inaugural contest this year. The Top 10 finishers will receive prize money. There will also be prizes awarded every quarter of the football season for the most correct picks. Prizes will be split if there are ties each quarter.
As of now, lines for the contest will be posted on Thursday morning each week of the NFL season around 8 am or 9 am. According to Palm, they’re still working out a deadline for when picks need to be submitted.
Similar to the SuperContest, participants must sign up for the contest in person. One thing that will be different than the SuperContest is the ability for contestants inside of Nevada will be able to make picks on their mobile app instead of visiting a casino to submit picks.
Proxy services will be allowed for out of state contestant to enter picks. However, Nevada residents can save a few bucks and submit picks from the comfort of home.
Stevens is a sports bettor that happens to operate casinos. He wants Circa Sports to evoke his passion for both.
Stevens wants customers to feel a similar rush that he had last year with a $25,000 bet on Michigan at 40-1 to win the NCAA basketball tournament. The potential win would have paid a cool million bucks and he wants others to feel that excitement.
The Golden Gate will offer a “no juice” promotion on opening day, June 1. This promotion and the “Circa Sports Million” are just the beginning. Expect to see more contests similar to the “Win Derek’s Car” promotion now running at The D Las Vegas.
THE FULL WORM MOON ON THE SPRING EQUINOX
In 2019, the full Moon of March rises the same day as the vernal equinox—marking the start of spring! How fitting for what we call the “Full Worm Moon.” March also brings the final supermoon of 2019. Here’s all you need to know.
*
This is one of those rare years when the full Moon lands right smack on the spring equinox—on March 20, 2019, in North America. This only happens three times a century, on average. Plus, it’s the third and final “supermoon.” Enjoy the extra-bright equinox full moon Wednesday night!
Here’s a video, featuring Amy Nieskens
The March full Moon is particularly special because it reaches its peak on the same day as the spring equinox, on March 20, 2019. The last time the full Moon and the spring equinox coincided this closely (4 hours apart) was in March 2000, but the last time they occurred on the same date was on March 20, 1981!
*
This full Moon is also a supermoon, meaning the Moon will be nearly at its closest to Earth for the month of March. It’s the year’s third (and final) of three straight full supermoons. This means that the Moon may “appear” brighter and bigger than normal, provided the night sky is clear and dark.
Did you know: Easter Sunday (in the Western Christian Church) is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full Moon that occurs on or just after the vernal equinox.
Since the full Moon AND the vernal equinox both fall on March 20 this year (in North America, at least), you might expect that Easter Sunday would be on the following Sunday, March 24.
However, for simplicity’s sake, the Church set a fixed date for the equinox, March 21. Additionally, the Church does not rely on the date of the astronomical full Moon, but rather the ecclesiastical full Moon, which occurs on the 14th day of the ecclesiastical lunar month. The date of the ecclesiastical full Moon may fall one to two days before the astronomical full Moon. Therefore, because the first full Moon after March 21 doesn’t occur until April 19 this year, Easter Sunday 2019 falls on Sunday, April 21!
*
(This is not the first time the church’s “set” equinox and astronomy’s “moving” equinox affected Easter’s date; it last happened in 1981 and will happen again in 2038.)

One of downtown’s iconic casinos has announced a pair of exciting projects in the works, a new full-service saloon, Whiskey Licker Up, and Hotel Apache, a boutique hotel.
Here’s a look at Whiskey Licker Up, a bar and restaurant which will feature a huge rotating bar as its centerpiece.
Whiskey Licker Up will sit on the southwest corner of Binion’s, directly above its popular Whiskey Licker Bar.
The bar will overlook Fremont Street Experience as well as its 1st Street stage.
The new venue will offer drinks, dining, drinks, dancing, live entertainment, drinking and a mechanical bull. As well as drinks, probably. It’s Las Vegas!

Construction of Whiskey Licker Up is expected to be completed in summer 2019.
You can already see a bit of the new venue peeking through the Binion’s facade.

Derek Stevens unveils Circa Resort & Casino for downtown Las Vegas to debut in 2020
LasVegasSun.com By Brock Radke Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019 | 10:30 p.m. *
Derek Stevens has been building bits of buzz and excitement in downtown Las Vegas since he and his brother Greg bought a stake in the Golden Gate on Fremont Street in October 2006. On Thursday night, Stevens unveiled his biggest project yet, the first new casino resort to be built downtown in decades.
Circa Resort & Casino is slated to open in December 2020 in the space formerly occupied by the Las Vegas Club where Fremont Street meets Main Street. As displayed in a flashy video played across a huge screen for an audience of hundreds inside a tent at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, Circa will have 777 hotel rooms, a two-story casino, a range of restaurants, a spa and the longest outdoor bar on Fremont Street, as well as a state-of-the-art parking structure and “transportation hub,” a rooftop pool amphitheater and a multi-level, stadium-style sportsbook Stevens called the largest in Las Vegas history.
*
Those latter features support Stevens’ explanation that Circa was conceived and designed as a new attraction inspired by a grand tradition of Las Vegas-style excitement.
