I snapped this photo of Denver artist Jesse Dubois at the Whole Foods store on South Colorado Blvd. Jesse had an easel set up in the cafe section of the market. The (accidental) sepia tones in the photograph are not altogether unlike the colors in some of Jesse’s pastels. I think the back-lighting created the effect.

I first met Jesse years ago when he had an easel set up in a shopping mall. He was trying to work between periodic harrassments from mall-punks. Jesse has certainly paid his “dues,” and he has evolved into a fine artist.

One of his major works, a bronze sculpture of a female, Denver physician, can be seen at the end of the train-line in the Five Points area of Denver.

I heard this tune (Richard Heene’s theme song) on the radio and had to post it. It’s a simple old-school- rock-style song with a “Creedence-like” driving (simple/basic) lead guitar.

“Richard Heene was so committed to getting his own reality show, he even went so far as to come up with his theme music — because every wacky amateur scientist/handyman needs good theme music.”

One of the best attributes of The Lodge Casino’s Seasons Buffet is the decor. One gets the feeling that one is in a steak-house rather than in a buffet. OK, so it’s a buffet and it looks like a buffet, however, it’s one of the warmest rooms around, and that includes the buffets in Las Vegas. This room has windows

Light-sconces and black-framed, foody-prints on the walls, (some) wood-paneling and subtle-r lighting than most buffet rooms give this place a feeling of traquility amidst the chaos of the casino monster.

The food seems to be of a good quality – maybe even a notch above the norm. The standard salad-bar, and specialty stations are well stocked and varied; The dessert bar offers a choclate fountain, and sugar-free desserts as well as not-so-sugar-free desserts.

The staff must be well managed since they seem to be resonably happy and friendly.

I was doing Navajo street’s “First Fridays Art Walk” on, guess what, Friday night, and was drawn to *Patsy’s (Patsy’s Inn restaurant ) front door like the proverbial moth to a flame. Actually my first stop was going to be Patsy’s. The open door of Patsy’s was emenating energy not altogether unlike the exceptionally bright, (almost) full moon. Maybe it was more like a bonfire, which was burning, in the midst of the smaller campfires – lights from gallery windows. Whatever it was, it was an energy fest.

In addition to the (half-dozen) open art galleries, there was a birthday party (or some other kind of party) going on at the restaurant, adding immensely to the overall ambience of the evening. The entire block was “happening.” Oh yea, the Bug Theater, across the street from Patsy’s was open for business: “Modern Muse Theatre Presents: “SPEED THE PLOW” by David Mamet.”

When I say “it was happening,” I don’t just mean activity, I’m talking classy people in a classy scene. I was at another place near 8th & Colorado Blvd. (which I won’t name) earlier in the evening. The crowd were a bunch of dead-brains with not enough collective imagination to have a bad idea! (I’ve got to write that place off…)

After Patsy’s I headed a block south to the D Gallery ( I received an email invite to their METRO RETRO show.) What a fine gallery. The food spread was tastefully executed – a veritable work of art. I also found two other delicious pieces d’art: artists Jim Petty and Marlene Feinholz each had, at least, one work that passed my threshold test….

*By the way, Patsy’s Inn is a long-time favorite, old-school, neighborhood, Italian restaurant that has been around since the 1920s.

SPUD MONKEYS headlining the Riverside Art and Music Festival, Aug 15th in Salida, Colorado

“Once upon a time, there was a little town called Crestone CO. And in that town there was a dusty saloon called the Silver Crest Palace. It was a rough place at the end of a dead end road, filled with dropouts and outlaws. It was the kind of place you wouldn’t want to bring your kids to, but people did anyway. At one end of the bar was a jukebox and at the other end a stage, and on that stage the local talent came together to play. Out of those local performers, Keepher Pez handpicked only the cream of the crop to form the greatest band to ever grace the upper San Luis Valley. This band called themselves the Spudmonkeys, and it was good. Since their humble beginnings, the Spudmonkeys have played in as many gin joints and speakeasies as they could, honing their musical skills and blowing the minds of audience members along the way. Spudmonkeys has a large and growing fan base that travels to see them play. Their popularity is due to the word of mouth advertising that continues to pac venues the band has only played one or two times.”

7-11 trip to the Colorado Casinos

We made a “Happy Birthday” trip up to the casinos in Black Hawk, Colorado on July 11, 2009. One of us was celebrating a birthday on 7-11. The Riviera Casino sent the birthday reveler a comp for two (free) buffets. So we brought along a 2-4-1 buffet coupon, which we already had, bringing the total to: four dinner buffets for the price of one. (Back to the buffet in a minute.)

Since we hit the casinos around three o’clock in the afternoon we had more than enough time to do a little gaming. The birthday person was good to go since this person was given a nice amount of cash as a birthday gift.

We first stopped in at The Ameristar Casino , checked out the buffet (two in our party had not seen Ameristar’s buffet,) which is something to see: The round, rustic buffet room, beaming with energy, has high, vaulted ceilings finished with high-quality wood paneling/beams. Top craftsmanship is evident. The buffet is loaded with food choices, Las Vegas style.

After checking out the buffet, we fooled around at the slot banks near the buffet. After a while I was expounding on my top criteria for picking a slot/video machine: (1) pick a machine that is in view of a captured audience, like the diners at a buffet/restaurant or people standing in line at a buffet/restaurant. The theory being that “loose” machines are placed in these areas to create excitement, and to evoke a winning vibe. If you ran a casino, would you want customers staring at dead space? Also, sit at machines near money cages, gift shops, slot clubs etc. Stay away from machines that are in out-of-the-way corners of the floor or by restrooms. Someone going to the restroom has something other than gaming on their mind.

*Just as I was explaining my theory (standing by a bank of machines near the buffet) a gentleman hit a loaded video poker hand: a $1 (5X) Royal Flush for $4,040 and change. Visit these pages for more gaming tips.

Back to the Riv’s buffet. The large, high-ceilinged room is “blue” with huge, somewhat awkward chandeliers. We were shown a cozy, secluded table in a corner and went immediately to the salad bar, which is decent/average (they might want to identify the salad dressings, since no one knew what was what. ) There were tiny markings on the ladles, but the ladles were all mixed up. Anyway we feasted on shrimp, Snow Crab legs, roast beef, pastas, salads, fruits, veggies and desserts. Other items at the buffet were chicken/fixins, Asian dishes, soups, breads and more.

Although the food is tasty and well prepared, the Riv’s buffet is limited (by Las Vegas standards.)

After our buffet feast (as we left the buffet, theire was a fairly long line waiting to get in – in fact it was the longest line I’ve ever seen at the Riv,) we played a little (at the casino.) The casino floor was lively and busy. I was playing Multi-Strike for pennies and hit the top line (loaded) for about $40.00. Not a bad hit for an under a dollar bet. I was disapointed to find that **Hexbreaker was removed from the casino floor. Thanks anyway Riviera for the birthday gift…

Next, we walked across the street to the The Isle of Capri Hotel Casino.

The consensus of opinion was that The Isle of Capri was a definate Fav. Probably because three of us were getting (many) free beers/drinks at the bar, I (self-designated) was the designated driver. Also, the same three got nice comps for signing up for Slot Cards. They will get (in the mail) a voucher for a free room + a slip for $10.00 cash. All they had to do was play $10.00. The birthday guest got two dessert comps – he already had a card.

I didn’t really check out the buffet at The Isle of Capri, but here’s their info:

At 12:01 a.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, Colorado casinos raise gaming stakes a notch: raising wager limits from $5 to $100, adding Roulette and Craps, and extending hours to a full-blown 24/7. Prior to the passing of amendment 50, the casinos closed at 2 a.m. and the only (table) games in town were: poker, blackjack and let it ride.

This place is not for the faint-hearted. First and foremost, Lechuga’s aien’t no HOITY-TOITY joint. Especially not the lounge area, where there is definately a serious bar scene. If you can handle that, read on…

Lechuga’s Italian Restaurant & Lounge (formerly Carbone’s Pizza – Est. 1961) owns a considerable chunk of *Denver’s Little Italy’s history. The restaurant is in an area that used to be Denver’s Little Italy. The area was Denver’s Little Italy up to the 80s. (Numbers of Italian-Americans were moving out by this time and many Spanish speaking folks were settling into the [**Highland] district.)

Known for it’s thin-crust, square pizza, spaghetti and canolis, Denver-style, Carbone’s was one of the neighborhood anchors for the Italian-Americans of North Denver. The current owners wisely kept Carbone’s menu and recipes alive over the years. Now the restaurant is a multi-ethnic anchor for: Hispanics, Italians, Anglos, Greys etc…etc…etc…My understanding is that the current owners represent two ethnicities.

The restaurant has two dining areas. The main dining room, on the north side of the resturant, is where families and non-bar-type-folks dine. It is starkly lit and somewhat basic – fine for family dining. Then there’s the Lounge, which is dimly lit and frilled, with: neon, celebrity photos, wrought iron latice, sports memorabilia and TVs. There are booths and tables at the (sunken) bar level. Up a half-level, there is a-kind-of-stadium-seating area with three arched booths (WHERE YOU WANT TO SIT) on one wall, and tables around the perimeter overlooking the bar area – with it’s dance floor, the smallish L-shaped bar, and the Pièce de résistance: a photo-collage of King Frank above the bar – watching over the place like a crucifix behind the alter in a church (see photo below.)

After dinner, head south on Tejon, a half-dozen or so blocks until you dead end at a three story milk can. That’s Little Man Ice Cream. Little Man Ice Cream is a brilliantly housed Ice Cream Shop. The perfectly scaled building is built to look like an old-fashioned milk can.

[a]Lechuga’s Spaghetti is real, old-school. You’ll recognize the flavor if you “go back” to the 50s & 60s, especially in Denver. The spaghetti noodles (thin and thick) are always cooked “right,” just-a-bit al dente. The Marinara sauce is robust, and the meatballs / sausage are bona fide, authentic. My only complaint is the complaint one can raise in most restaurants, the pasta is never sufficiently drained before plating.

*In the beginning, the Italian immigrants lived in tent shanty’s along the banks of the Plate river, in the so called “bottoms.” When these new Americans began to prosper and stake their “American Dream” claims, they moved on up to the **Highland District of Northwest Denver. **The Highland District is bounded roughly by Zuni Street on the East, West 38th Avenue on the North, Federal Boulevard on the West and West 32nd Avenue on the South. This was the nucleus of Denver’s Little Italy. Technically Lechuga’s is a few blocks beyond these parameters.
