Balloon Boy’s father, Richard Heene’s theme song “The Psyience Detective”

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

I heard this tune (Richard Heene’s theme song) on the radio and had to post it. It’s a simple old-school- rock-style song with a “Creedence-like” driving (simple/basic) lead guitar.

The following was copped from TMZs Youtube channel …

“Richard Heene was so committed to getting his own reality show, he even went so far as to come up with his theme music — because every wacky amateur scientist/handyman needs good theme music.”

“Heene worked with a guy named Smokey Miles (and Meson Music BMI) to compose theme songs in 2005 for two shows Heene cooked up — “The Psyience Detective” and “The Contractor.” And they are gems!”

“The first, which Richard played bass on, goes a little something like this:”

“When you want to learn the mysteries of how things work
Weather, the planets, the whole universe.
Tune into the show, that’s really effective
Watch Richard Heene — Science Detective!”

The second tune is sort of a country-style talking ramble – not as interesting.

Frank Marinos Divas Las Vegas
Frank Marino's Divas Las Vegas

Since Frank Marino’s drag show at the Riviera Hotel closed “way-back-when,” there has been a good deal of speculation as to when and where the lady might surface.
Claire Voyant ends the speculation in an October 16th post:

“Not at all surprising, after the impressive Labor Day weekend “test” of Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas revue (more than 5,000 people saw the new show over four nights), the Imperial Palace has made Divas a part of their ongoing entertainment lineup. Beginning tomorrow night (Saturday, October 17th), Frank Marino plus a cast of 13, will take the 10 p.m. time slot in the __-[sic] seat showroom. In addition to Marino, who, as producer, Mistress of Ceremonies/ Hostess, is the glue that holds Divas together, the performers are made up of impersonators Derrick Barry as Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, Kenneth Blake as Madonna and Dolly Parton, Larry Edwards as Tina Turner and Beyonce, Sammy Gonzales as Liza Minnelli, Joseph Santellano as Bette Midler and Shirley Bassey, Steven Wayne as Cher and Celine Dion, and Crystal Woods as Diana Ross and Whitney Houston. The Frank Marino Dancers are Jonathon Arsenault, Jeremy Butcher, Michael Cannarata, Stephen Lowry, Jason Mckenzie, and Paul Pratt. Choreography is by Gary Thomas (for the Britney Spears and Lady Gaga numbers) and Brad Barnes (all other numbers). Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas joins the family-friendly Japanese hit “Muscle Musical,” Matsuri, and the Australian “boy band” Human Nature, presented by Smokey Robinson. Matsuri plays at 4 p.m., Wednesdays through Mondays, with an added 8 p.m. show on Fridays. Tickets are $49.99 and $59.99. Human Nature show times are 8 p.m., Saturdays through Thursdays, and tickets are $49.95 and $59.95. Divas plays at 10 p.m., Saturdays through Thursdays. Ticket prices are $69 and $79. CHARO performing on guitar at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

As I promised, here’s that video clip of Charo and her guitar at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas – August, 2009. The virtuoso performance took place in the Crazy Girls showroom. The clip is 46 seconds long.

María Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza is also known as Charo.

I felt priviliged to be able to witness this performance by one of the finest Flamenco guitarists in the world.
The great Andres Segovia gave Charo master-classes when she was in her teens. The classes certainly paid off, or so it would seem.

Robin Leach: “Charo cancellation: Injured foot or poor ticket sales at the Riviera?”

This post was culled from Robin Leach’s Las Vegas blog, September 11, 2009.

“Rumors abound that the real reason Charo suspended her show at the Riviera yesterday, citing a foot injury, is because of disappointing and sluggish box office ticket sales.”

“Producers were allegedly bleeding red ink due to falling tourism numbers and the barren, darkened stretch of the Strip between the Encore and Sahara.”

“Charo says the ankle injury sustained after a TV cable trip backstage at the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon this past weekend at the South Point made it impossible for the show to go on.”

“I’d have thought that because Charo is such a brilliant Flamenco guitarist and energetic singer, she could have sat on a stool with her foot bandaged up and won the sympathy vote!”

Legendary electric picker, BB King – master of Lucille and owner of the classic Blues tune “The Thrill is Gone” – is bringing his namesake restaurant, bar and nightclub: BB King’s Blues Club to the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

King is a pioneer (50s) electric-powered blues singer who excelled (largely, in part) due to his soulful guitar style’s expressive string-bending technique, and weaving notes around sounds coming from his gravely voice.

SPUD MONKEYS headlining the Riverside Art and Music Festival, Aug 15th in Salida, Colorado

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedinmailby feather

“Once upon a time, there was a little town called Crestone CO. And in that town there was a dusty saloon called the Silver Crest Palace. It was a rough place at the end of a dead end road, filled with dropouts and outlaws. It was the kind of place you wouldn’t want to bring your kids to, but people did anyway. At one end of the bar was a jukebox and at the other end a stage, and on that stage the local talent came together to play. Out of those local performers, Keepher Pez handpicked only the cream of the crop to form the greatest band to ever grace the upper San Luis Valley. This band called themselves the Spudmonkeys, and it was good. Since their humble beginnings, the Spudmonkeys have played in as many gin joints and speakeasies as they could, honing their musical skills and blowing the minds of audience members along the way. Spudmonkeys has a large and growing fan base that travels to see them play. Their popularity is due to the word of mouth advertising that continues to pac venues the band has only played one or two times.”

“The Spuds will be playing at the Riverside Art and Music Festival, in the lovely town of Salida, CO. We will be the headliner Aug 15th on the main stage in Riverside Park @ 6:00pm this should be a great show so I hope everyone will be there!”

Information is from the Spud Monkey’s Official Website.

CHARO: World’s première Flamenco guitar virtuoso

Remember “The Cuchi Cuchi Girl” on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (45+ appearances.)
María Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza is also known as Charo.

Charo’s August 5th performance at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas was executed in two parts. In the first half you saw the Charo you know: the comedian, the singer, and all-around show-woman. She was brilliant, funny and spectacular. She sparkled in a red-sequined outfit, singing tunes from her CD’s, such as: “I Will Survive,” and cracking jokes about accents as well as other aspects of the human condition.

Without a doubt, the most humorous moment came when she spoke of being so poor in her youth that she didn’t have enough to eat – then after achieving success she couldn’t eat because of diets and weight watching – after saying this, she repeatedly “mouthed” the F bomb.

Accompanied by a troup of Flamenco dancers and a high-power-group of musicians, the first half of the show was fast paced, hard-hitting and well rehearsed. The show’s lighting was an artful display of color and dream imagery. Now I’ll tell you about the positive stuff.

The second half of the show was about guitar – Flamenco guitar. Charo displayed the mastery that earned her ‘Guitar magazine”s Readers Poll as Best Flamenco Guitarist two years in a row. Her strokes were robust, true and firm; the *”shotgun-tremelo” was flawless. (My pretention here is due to studying a-bit-of classical guitar.)

Her fingers (both hands) were moving like she was a super-human being. The little-finger, of her left hand, was – relaxed – in the precise, classical position. This is something one can only achieve after years of practice.

The “show stopper” for me was a moving rendition of Ravel’s Bolaro, of which you can hear a few bars on Charo’s website.

According to IMDb, when she was 14, María Rosario Pilar Martínez Molina Baeza won a scholarship to study classical guitar with Andrés Segovia.

Brava Charo!

Keep tuned to this page, there will soon be a link to a video clip of Charo.
*So maybe I’m using a common term…

Time for another Full Moon! The moon will be 100% full August 5, 2009 at 5:56 P.M. Las Vegas time.

zuni_art_thumb

OUT WEST:
“American Indians gave names to each of the full moons to keep track of the passing year. The names are associated with the entire month until the next full moon occurs. Since a lunar month averages 29 days, the dates of the moons change from year to year. Here are titles most closely associated with calendar months” read more from The Western Washington University Planetarium Website

According to Western Washington University, The Comanche of the Southern Plains refer to this August (5th) Full Moon as: “tahma mua” or summer moon (click the WWU link above for more information.)

algonquin_art_thumb

Back East:
“Historically the Native Americans who lived in the area that is now the northern and eastern United States kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to the recurring full Moons. Each full Moon name was applied to the entire month in which it occurred. These names, and some variations, were used by the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior.” read more from The Old Farmer’s Almanac

The full Moon name for this month is Full Sturgeon Moon. Some Native American tribes knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full Moon. Others called it the Green Corn Moon or the Grain Moon.”

Astrologically speaking:
Full Moon in Aquarius, By Molly Hall at About.com
“This year’s Aquarius Full Moon is on August 5/6, depending on your time zone, and is preceded by a penumbral (partial) lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse is exact August 5th, at 8:39 pm EDT, with the full Moon exact at 8:55 pm EDT.” read more from Molly Hall at About.com
